Synopsis
Pico Island, Azores, North Atlantic. After the ban on whaling in 1984, the Azores began a process of transition. However, the tangible and intangible heritage faces an uncertain future.
João Tavares (78) is one of the last shipwrights building the azorean whaleboat, a tradition with more than a century of history.
After 30 years of restoring azorean patrimony, João is building a new whaleboat. A whaleboat he was far from imagining.
Mestre do Mar is a documentary film that perpetuates an endangered knowledge and honors and values the Azorean culture and its shipbuilders.
The documentary addresses the refoundation of cultural heritage and explores regenerative tourism in the Azores.
